The rebellion ideas in Star Wars and the like may have found particular traction in the south.
Interestingly, we and probably most northerners can’t trace our roots back in the US to before the civil war. My family encountered this when we lived in the south, since we were “Yankees”.

Given the way Grant cut a swath of fire through Georgia, plus stories of abuses at the hand of Union soldiers, it may stand to reason that people down there hold a grudge. My own abolitionist state was gung ho to fight in the civil war and at the same time created the Dakota war back home. Delaware was one of several that waited until the 20 th century to ratify the emancipation proclamation. States like Maryland and Delaware stayed in the union but kept slavery going during the civil war. Washington and Jefferson had slaves on their estates. I think the Space Western is a fine setting for metaphoric exploration, but, so far, I’ve only seen a series of set-pieces which I’ve encountered many times before. The Human condition is universal, but how in synch are you with a denizen of the 16th Century?
None of this particularly bothers me, except that for a series set in the 26th Century there is no indication that Human thought or Human outlook has progressed in any way from what it was in the mid-19th Century. You don’t need such slavish adherence to the model to convey that this is a hard-pressed frontier community – it’s too taxing on the audience’s suspension of disbelief. Most elements of the setting are traditional western: We just need a Lawman, Evil Cattle Baron, Native Scout, Wizened Miner, Card Shark, Barkeep, Barber, Telegraph Officer and Gravedigger to complete the set.

Rewatching it now, I was surprised by how forward the trappings of traditional westerns were. I haven’t seen Firefly since it first aired.
